The annual award recognizes innovation and lifetime achievement

Pete Tong surprised Kenny and Louie at the end of their keynote interview

Kenny ‘Dope’ Gonzalez and ‘Little’ Louie Vega are this year’s recipients of the IMS Pioneer Award, which is awarded annually at the International Music Summit in Ibiza to artists, producers and other industry figures in recognition of lifetime achievement and innovation.

Kenny and Louie were given their award by Pete Tong at the end of his keynote interview with the pair. The hour-long discussion covered MAW’s career from the very start to the present day, and can be found on the IMS Facebook page.

The interview’s well worth a watch, too! We had no idea, for instance, that the Nu Yorican Soul project was inspired by watching the jazz dance sessions at Southport Weekender. And we probably did know, but had entirely forgotten, that the original MAW logo, as featured on the label artwork of their earliest releases on Cutting Records, was a little different from the one we’re used to seeing today.

Previous winners of the IMS Pioneer Award have included the likes of Arthur Baker, Defected boss Simon Dunmore, Def Mix founder Judy Weinstein and Cream’s James Barton
